Skies of America
If you are reading this post today, hopefully it is due to the fact that you're trying to kill a bit of time while waiting in line to VOTE! This Election Day edition of our weekly posts on jazz album covers takes us back to Ornette Coleman and his 1972 composition for the London Symphony Orchestra titled Skies of America. Artist Michael Gross created the image of birds ripping into the flag, here read as the fabric of our society. Gross was a successful designer, creating iconic covers for National Lampoon magazine (yes, the infamous death issue) and many others. And who could forget his logo for the Ghostbusters franchise? Mr. Gross began painting for himself again in retirement during the 1990s and died last year at the age of 70. You can hear the entire Skies of America suite below.
